About

in Amalfi, Italy

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain

“Tramps like us, baby, we were born to run.” – Bruce Springsteen

The Blog

Hi, I’m Maura and this is my blog. In Lieu of Postcards is not a new-destination every day, #vanlife kind of travel blog. It’s a blog about my travels, of course, but also about travel as a concept, as a state of mind or feeling. I will write about my travels, past and present, as well as ideas related to travel in literature and popular culture. My photos aren’t professional (I’m not one to lug a tripod anywhere), but I think I take a pretty good snapshot. I will make the occasional recommendation, but I’m a writer first and foremost, not a travel expert.

This blog is for those who travel, but also those who dream of travel – those who know the ache of longing to experience something new, and the euphoria of finding yourself in a faraway land.

Me

I’m a freelance writer/editor and part-time instructor at the University of Oklahoma. My writing has appeared in HelloGiggles and Paste Magazine, and I was a Staff Writer for five years at the indie music site Cokemachineglow. I write regularly for PetMD, PawCulture, and ProFmagazine.
